Buddhist Classes
at the
Hegeler Carus Mansion

On the first and third Thursday of each month, the Hegeler Carus Foundation will feature classes taught by Buddhist priest, Diane Martin.

The lessons will feature readings and discussion of the classics of
Buddhist literature.  In staying close to the teachings of D.T. Suzuki,
classes will focus on his translations of the lectures of his teacher,
Shaku Soyen, gathered into a book known as
Sermons of
a Buddhist Abbot
.  Shaku Soyen was the Zen teacher who came
to the 1893 World's Parliament of Religions and later met with
Dr. Paul Carus at the family home in La Salle .

It was Soyen who sent his best student, D.T. Suzuki, to La Salle
to work for the Open Court Publishing Co. The "sermons" text
will serve as a reference book and give a sense of where
D.T. Suzuki came from in his training.

Further readings will include the Heart Sutra.
The Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra or
Heart Sutra (or Essence of Wisdom Sutra)
is a well-known Mahayana Buddhist sutra that is
very popular among Buddhists both for its brevity
and depth of meaning.

Buddhist writer and translator Bill Porter, whose book could
form the basis of the study, calls the Heart Sutra the best
known  and most popular of all Buddhist scriptures
B
ecause Buddhism itself is an experiential religion based
on the two fundamental practices of meditation and mindfulness,
there will be a 20 minute zazen period before book study.

Zen is a training base flowing with and aiming at Awakening.
D.T. Suzuki himself was trained in formal Zen with its
primary methods of meditation and mindfulness, penetrating
insight and removal of obstructions and hindrances.
Out of respect, the class will proceed in the same manner.

Classes begin at 6:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month.
